Singing with Edette

The Music Room at Whistler Secondary School on Friday, January 20th was the setting for not one but two singing workshops with clinician Edette Gagne. In the afternoon, members of the Whistler Chorus and the Intermediate Choir worked with Edette followed by an evening workshop for members of the Whistler Singers and other interested adult singers in the community. Both workshops were well attended and extremely successful. Exploring how our voices and bodies work and using tools such as corks and chopsticks left everyone with a better appreciation and understanding of how to sing. From monkey sounds to the final performance of the African song Ipharadisi, participants focused on sound production and certainly we could all see the difference by the end of each workshop! Intermediate choir members Cain, Charlotte and Aislinn talked about ‘throwing the frisbee’, ‘singing with fish lips’ and thinking about the top of your head as ‘silly putty’. For most of the workshops, pictures were not permitted – 20 singers with corks in their mouths or their tongues hanging over chopsticks are not pretty sights! However, a good time was had by all and the choirs hope to host similar workshops in the future. Thanks go to the Whistler Arts Council who provided funding for these workshops. Upcoming events for the Whistler Chorus, Whistler Children’s Chorus and Whistler Singers include the Howe Sound Music Festival on Friday, April 13th.

Christmas Eve Thanks

Every Dec. 24, members of the Whistler community and visitors come together to celebrate at the annual Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols. Everyone is welcomed and, for an hour, the outside world is left behind.

This year the tradition continued and it is important that we acknowledge the many volunteers who have helped to make our 28th annual Carol Service such a special event. Our readers are local residents who, with their families, contribute to our community in many ways throughout the years — Cain Susko, Rebecca Blaser, Karen Smith, Dave Williamson, Rowena Vincent-Nordin, Janet Hamer, Charalyn Kriz, Rosemary and David Malaher. Along with our host, Chris Quinlan, their readings and prayers reminded us of the importance of peace and good will toward all.

What would a carol service be without music? Thank you to the Whistler Children’s Chorus, the Whistler Singers, our wonderful pianist Rachael Lythe and our amazing guest percussionist Lauri Lyster. Without sound, we wouldn’t hear the choirs and we are so very lucky to have Whistler’s own Andrew Griffiths as our “sound guy.”

We would also like to thank the Westin Resort and Spa — especially Rowena McHugh — for providing us with our venue, and all the local businesses that willingly displayed posters. Thank you to Tessa and the Whistler Question for our beautiful and colourful ads and your generosity.

Finally, thank you to everyone who joined us at 6:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve to celebrate in the spirit of Christmas. You outdid yourselves singing the carols — they sounded great!

See you next year — same time, same place — for the 29th annual Carol Service.

Christmas Eve Carol Service Tonight!

Join us tonight for the 28th Annual Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols. Featuring the Whistler Children’s Chorus and the Whistler Singers, the carol service provides the opportunity for people of all faiths to come together and celebrate the peace and good will toward all. As well as carols to sing, members of the Whistler community read short excerpts of the traditional Christmas story.
Carol service begins at 6:30pm in the Emerald Ballroom of the Westin Resort & Spa.

This event is by donation. All proceeds go towards helping to continue to provide this community service.
